I do not know if you grew up in a small town or not, but I did, Fort Edward, New York. It is a small town in upstate New York. I graduated with about 60 kids at that time in 1975.….. There is something about driving into the small town that you grew up in. A sense of peace and history…….I always pass the cemetery where too many of my family members rest…….all kinds of thoughts and memories pop into your head, and sometimes haunt. I always stop and visit and have conversations with my dad, mom, brother, grandparents and other relatives. Sounds corny, I know, but I truly know they hear me and even talk back with thoughts in my head. I love to freshen the flowers there and make sure that they look just right, clean off the headstones, and brush off my dad’s military stone/marker. Even though years have passed, it feels like yesterday living there. Some of the buildings have changed, but not really……..the faces…..love to see the familiar faces……when I left, I wanted to see the world like many others, but sometimes things are right in front of you that you do not see at that time….Acres of Diamonds.…..I walk down the street and sometimes expect to see my mom and dad, and my brother…....but only in my memories…..I love the Church on Broadway. It is a beautiful Church with so many memories…...births, confirmations, 1st communions, marriages and then deaths…..bittersweet…….. then after a couple days of visiting, I pack up and drive back to New Hampshire………the grieving process….the healing process, it’s crappy sometimes but something we all must go thru at some point…….so I say good bye to my small town for now knowing that I will be back again soon…..there is something spiritual and peaceful walking thru that cemetery and saying hello to all so many of my family that died way too soon for me….it’s my peace of Heaven…….
Bio for Eileen Donbeck Doyon
The loss of family members early in my life has been extremely difficult, and most recently I lost my dad to lung cancer and was with him til the end. I have been trying to figure out how to deal with death due to it being so much a part of my life. Most people will deal with loss at some point in their lifetime. The past two years have been depressing, complicated, and dark. In receiving two treasures last year, my dad's dog tags, and my grandmother's chandelier, it meant so much to me, my attitude, and my outlook on my own life. I felt their presence and their love all around me. I knew that others in my situation had to feel the same way. If so, I wanted to help. So that became my mission....to help others talk about their loved ones who have passed and to tell their stories of their own personal keepsakes. Our military is very precious to me. We owe so much to our veterans that have served and protected our country. So this became my theme of my second book.
People were so excited, emotional, happy, and sad all in one, but it was all good. We laughed and cried talking about memories and stories of loved ones. Sometimes, those feeling are buried deep down due to the crazy hectic lives we all live, and sometimes it just hurts too much to think or talk about. Everyone's comments were so supportive and positive. It really became a healing to all and made people feel good.
So, in this hectic life, I have decided to run a series of books titled "Unforgettable Faces and Stories". We all need to stop and think about people in our lives, both past and present, and stories of those unforgettable magic moments.
