During the grieving process it's common to feel like you're at the whim of your unpredictable emotions. There's a loss of control that many feel during this time, and emotions play a major roll in that. One moment you could be feeling down, thinking about your loss, and the next you could be rolling in laughter thinking about a funny memory of your loved one. For some, it helps to talk about these emotions with friends and family. Others might need something more concrete to do in order to take control of these emotions and pull back the reigns a little. To those people I say, write something. The written word is often just the thing we need to clear our minds and calm our nerves.
Write a Letter to Your Departed Loved One
The hardest thing to get used to after the loss of a loved one is their absence in everyday life. We can no longer call them up to tell them about our day. We are no longer greeted by their smiling face when we walk in the door. At these times when you're missing your loved one the most, write a letter. Tell them everything you wanted to tell them about that day. Write about that one last thing you wanted to tell them before they died. Write to your loved one and say exactly what you would say to them if they were standing before you today.
Write in a Journal
For some people, talking about their feelings with people isn't easy, but they still need some type of outlet. Keeping a journal is a great way to get something off your chest, to express your feelings, and just reminisce about your loved one without having to share information you don't want to share.
