They tell me to talk to you, that even though you are gone you can still hear me. It makes me wonder if you can hear the screams inside my head that have to stay there so no one knows how hard it is without you. I hope not.

My elder daughter died in 2007 from the injuries she received in a car crash. Oddly, she died on the 23rd day of the month, the same day she was born. Each year, as I approach the anniversary of her death, I pause and take some time to assess my grief journey. This year is no different. In a few days I start the ninth year without my daughter.

Grief is a natural response to losing a loved one. Your emotional response is very personal and takes time.  Healing happens gradually; it can’t be forced or hurried.  What is important is that whatever your experience is, you need to be patient with yourself and allow your heart to follow the course that is best for you.
